John 1

(1) In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and god was the word. (2) This one was in the beginning with God. (3) All things came to be through it, and apart from it not even one thing came to be that has come to be. (4) In it was life, and the life was the light of men. (5) And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.

(6) There came to be a man, sent from god, whose name was John. (7) This one came for a witness, that he might bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. (8) He was not the light, but came that he might bear witness about the light.

(9) The true light was that which enlightens every man coming into the world. (10) In the world it was, and the world came to be through it, and the world did not know it. (11) It came to its own, and its own did not receive it. (12) But as many as received it — to those believing in its name — it gave authority to become children of god, (13) who were born not from blood, nor from the will of flesh, nor from the will of a man, but from god.

(14) And the word came to be flesh and tabernacled among us — full of grace and truth — and we beheld his glory, glory as of the only-begotten from the Father. (15) John bears witness about him and has cried out, saying, “This was the one of whom I said, ‘The one coming after me has come to be before me, because he was first — before me.’” (16) For from his fullness we all received, and grace instead of grace. (17) For the law was given through Moses; the grace and the truth came to be through Jesus Christ. (18) No one has ever seen God; the only-begotten god, the one being in the bosom of the Father — that one made Him known.

(19) And this is the witness of John, when the Judeans sent to him priests and Levites from Jerusalem, that they might ask him, “Who are you?” (20) And he confessed and did not deny — and he confessed — “I am not the Christ.” (21) And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” And he says, “I am not.” “Are you the prophet?” And he answered, “No.” (22) They said then to him, “Who are you? — so that we may give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” (23) He said, “I am a voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ just as Isaiah the prophet said.” (24) And those sent were from the Pharisees. (25) And they asked him and said to him, “Why then do you baptize, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?” (26) John answered them, saying, “I baptize in water. In the midst of you stands one whom you do not know — (27) the one coming after me, of whom I am not worthy to unloose the strap of his sandal.” (28) These things happened in Bethany, across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

(29) On the next day he sees Jesus coming toward him and says, “Behold, the lamb of God, the one taking away the sin of the world! (30) This is the one of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who has come to be before me, because he was first — before me.’ (31) And I did not know him, but that he might be revealed to Israel, for this I came, baptizing in water.” (32) And John bore witness, saying, “I have seen the spirit descending as a dove from heaven, and it remained upon him. (33) And I did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize in water, that one said to me, ‘Upon whomever you see the spirit descending and remaining upon him, this one is the one baptizing in holy spirit.’ (34) And I have seen and have borne witness that this one is the son of God.”

(35) On the next day John was again standing, and two of his disciples. (36) And having looked intently at Jesus walking, he says, “Behold, the lamb of God!” (37) And the two disciples heard him speaking, and they followed Jesus. (38) And Jesus, having turned and seeing them following, says to them, “What do you seek?” And they said to him, “Rabbi — which is being translated ‘Teacher’ — where are you staying?” (39) He says to them, “Come, and you will see.” They went then and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about the tenth hour. (40) Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard this from John and followed him. (41) This one first finds his own brother Simon and says to him, “We have found the Messiah — which is being translated ‘Christ.’” (42) And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus, having looked intently at him, said, “You are Simon, the son of John; you will be called Cephas — which is interpreted ‘Peter.’”

(43) On the next day he wanted to go out into Galilee, and he finds Philip. And Jesus says to him, “Follow me.” (44) Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. (45) Philip finds Nathanael and says to him, “We have found the one of whom Moses wrote in the law — and the prophets — Jesus, son of Joseph, from Nazareth.” (46) And Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” Philip says to him, “Come and see.” (47) Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and says about him, “Behold, truly an Israelite, in whom there is no deceit!” (48) Nathanael says to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” (49) Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the son of God; you are king of Israel!” (50) Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ you believe? You will see greater things than these.” (51) And he says to him, “Amen, amen, I say to you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the son of the man.”

John 2

(1) And on the third day a wedding happened in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. (2) And Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding. (3) And when the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus says to him, “They have no wine.” (4) And Jesus says to her, “What is that to me and to you, woman? My hour has not yet come.” (5) His mother says to the servants, “Whatever he says to you, do.” (6) Now six stone water-jars were standing there, according to the purification of the Judeans, each holding two or three measures. (7) Jesus says to them, “Fill the water-jars with water.” And they filled them to the top. (8) And he says to them, “Draw out now and carry it to the master of the banquet.” And they carried it. (9) When the master of the banquet tasted the water that had come to be wine — and he did not know where it was from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew — the master of the banquet calls the bridegroom (10) and says to him, “Every man first sets the good wine, and when they have drunk freely, the inferior; you have kept the good wine until now.” (11) Jesus did this as the beginning of the signs in Cana of Galilee, and he manifested his glory, and his disciples believed in him. (12) After this he went down to Capernaum — he and his mother and his brothers and his disciples — and there they stayed not many days.

(13) And the Passover of the Judeans was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. (14) And he found in the temple those selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the money-changers sitting. (15) And having made a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple — both the sheep and the oxen — and he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned the tables. (16) And to those selling the doves he said, “Take these from here! Do not make the house of my Father a house of commerce.” (17) His disciples remembered that it is written, “The zeal of your house will consume me.” (18) The Judeans then answered and said to him, “What sign do you show us, that you do these things?” (19) Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this sanctuary, and in three days I will raise it.” (20) The Judeans then said, “This sanctuary was built in forty-six years, and you will raise it in three days?” (21) But he was speaking about the sanctuary of his body. (22) When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he was saying this, and they believed the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.

(23) Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in his name, seeing his signs which he was doing. (24) But Jesus himself was not entrusting himself to them, because he knew everyone, (25) and because he had no need that anyone bear witness about a man, for he himself knew what was in a man.

John 3

(1) There was a man from the Pharisees, Nicodemus by name, a ruler of the Judeans. (2) This one came to him by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you have come from god as a teacher, for no one is able to do these signs that you do, unless God is with him.” (3) Jesus answered and said to him, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless anyone is born from above, he is not able to see the kingdom of God.” (4) Nicodemus says to him, “How is a man able to be born, being an old man? He is not able to enter a second time into the womb of his mother and be born, is he?” (5) Jesus answered, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless anyone is born from water and spirit, he is not able to enter into the kingdom of God. (6) The one having been born from the flesh is flesh, and the one having been born from the spirit is spirit. (7) Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘It is necessary for you to be born from above.’ (8) The spirit blows where it wills, and you hear its voice, but you do not know where it comes from and where it goes; so is everyone having been born from the spirit.” (9) Nicodemus answered and said to him, “How can these things come to be?” (10) Jesus answered and said to him, “You are the teacher of Israel, and you do not know these things? (11) Amen, amen, I say to you that we speak what we know and bear witness to what we have seen, and you do not receive our witness. (12) If I told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?”

(13) And no one has ascended into heaven except the one having descended from heaven, the son of the man. (14) And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so it is necessary for the son of the man to be lifted up, (15) that everyone believing in him might have life age-lasting. (16) For God loved the world in this way: He gave His only-begotten Son, that everyone believing in him might not perish but have life age-lasting. (17) For God did not send the Son into the world that he might judge the world, but that the world might be saved through him. (18) The one believing in him is not judged; but the one not believing has already been judged, because he has not believed in the name of the only-begotten son of God.

(19) And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light, for their works were evil. (20) For everyone practicing base things hates the light and does not come to the light, that his works might not be exposed. (21) But the one doing the truth comes to the light, that his works might be manifested, that they have been worked in god.

(22) After these things Jesus and his disciples came into the Judean land, and there he was staying with them and baptizing. (23) And John also was baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because many waters were there, and they were coming and being baptized. (24) For John had not yet been thrown into prison. (25) There happened then a dispute from the disciples of John with a Judean about purification. (26) And they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, he who was with you across the Jordan, of whom you have borne witness — behold, this one baptizes, and all are coming to him.” (27) John answered and said, “A man is not able to receive anything unless it has been given to him from heaven. (28) You yourselves bear witness to me that I said, ‘I am not the Christ,’ but that ‘I am sent before that one.’ (29) The one having the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, the one standing and hearing him, rejoices with joy because of the voice of the bridegroom. This then — my joy has been fulfilled. (30) That one must increase; I must decrease.”

(31) The one coming from above is above all; the one being from the earth is from the earth and speaks from the earth; the one coming from heaven is above all. (32) What he has seen and heard, this he bears witness to, and no one receives his witness. (33) The one having received his witness has set a seal that God is true. (34) For whom God sent speaks the words of God, for He gives the spirit not by measure. (35) The Father loves the son and has given all things into his hand. (36) The one believing in the son has life age-lasting; but the one disobeying the son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains upon him.

John 4

(1) When therefore Jesus knew that the Pharisees heard that Jesus makes and baptizes more disciples than John — (2) and yet Jesus himself was not baptizing, but his disciples — (3) he left Judea and went away again into Galilee. (4) And it was necessary for him to pass through Samaria. (5) He comes then to a city of Samaria being called Sychar, near the field that Jacob gave to Joseph his son. (6) And Jacob's spring was there. Jesus then, having grown weary from the journey, was sitting thus upon the spring. It was about the sixth hour.

(7) A woman from Samaria comes to draw water. Jesus says to her, “Give me to drink.” (8) For his disciples had gone away into the city, that they might buy foods. (9) The Samaritan woman then says to him, “How do you, being a Judean, ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” For Judeans do not have dealings with Samaritans. (10) Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give me to drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” (11) The woman says to him, “Sir, you have no bucket, and the well is deep; from where then do you have the living water? (12) You are not greater than our father Jacob, are you, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, and his sons and his flocks?” (13) Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone drinking from this water will thirst again; (14) but whoever drinks from the water that I will give him will never thirst for the age; but the water that I will give him will come to be in him a spring of water leaping into life age-lasting.” (15) The woman says to him, “Sir, give me this water, that I might not thirst, nor come here to draw.”

(16) He says to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” (17) The woman answered and said to him, “I do not have a husband.” Jesus says to her, “Well you said, ‘I do not have a husband’; (18) for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. This you have said truly.” (19) The woman says to him, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. (20) Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you say that in Jerusalem is the place where it is necessary to worship.” (21) Jesus says to her, “Believe me, woman, that an hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. (22) You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Judeans. (23) But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father seeks such ones worshiping Him. (24) God is spirit, and the ones worshiping Him must worship in spirit and truth.” (25) The woman says to him, “I know that Messiah is coming — the one being called Christ. When that one comes, he will announce all things to us.” (26) Jesus says to her, “I am he, the one speaking to you.”

(27) And upon this his disciples came, and they were marveling that he was speaking with a woman. No one however said, “What do you seek?” or “What do you speak with her?” (28) The woman then left her water-jar, went away into the city, and says to the men, (29) “Come, see a man who said to me all things that I did. Perhaps this one is the Christ?” (30) They went out from the city and were coming to him.

(31) In the meantime the disciples were asking him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.” (32) But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know.” (33) The disciples then were saying to one another, “No one brought him something to eat, did he?” (34) Jesus says to them, “My food is that I might do the will of the one having sent me and complete His work. (35) Do you not say that it is still four months, and the harvest comes? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and behold the fields, that they are white toward harvest already. (36) The one reaping receives wages and gathers fruit into life age-lasting, that the one sowing together might rejoice and the one reaping. (37) For in this the word is true: another is the one sowing, and another the one reaping. (38) I sent you to reap what you have not labored; others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.”

(39) And from that city many of the Samaritans believed in him because of the word of the woman bearing witness, “He said to me all things that I did.” (40) When then the Samaritans came to him, they were asking him to remain with them, and he remained there two days. (41) And many more believed because of his word. (42) They were saying to the woman, “No longer do we believe because of your talk, for we ourselves have heard and know that this one is truly the savior of the world.”

(43) After the two days he went out from there into Galilee. (44) For Jesus himself bore witness that a prophet has no honor in his own homeland. (45) When then he came into Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all things that he did in Jerusalem at the feast — for they also had come to the feast.

(46) He came then again to Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son was ailing in Capernaum. (47) This one, having heard that Jesus has arrived from Judea into Galilee, went away to him and was asking that he come down and heal his son, for he was about to die. (48) Jesus then said to him, “If you do not see signs and wonders, you will not believe.” (49) The royal official says to him, “Sir, come down before my little child dies.” (50) Jesus says to him, “Go; your son lives.” The man believed the word that Jesus said to him and was going. (51) Already while he was coming down, his slaves met him, saying that his child lives. (52) He inquired then from them the hour in which he had gotten better. They said then to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.” (53) The father knew that it was at that hour in which Jesus said to him, “Your son lives”; and he believed, he and his whole house. (54) Jesus did this again as a second sign, having come from Judea into Galilee.

John 5

(1) After these things there was a festival of the Judeans, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. (2) Now there is in Jerusalem, at the Sheep-Gate, a pool being called in Hebrew Bethzatha, having five colonnades. (3) In these were lying a multitude of the ailing — blind, lame, paralyzed. (5) And a certain man was there, having been in his infirmity thirty-eight years. (6) Jesus, having seen him lying and having known that he has already spent much time, says to him, “Do you wish to become well?” (7) The ailing one answered him, “Sir, I have no man, that when the water is stirred, he might put me into the pool; but while I am coming, another goes down before me.” (8) Jesus says to him, “Rise, take up your mat, and walk.” (9) And immediately the man became well, and he took up his mat and walked. Now it was the Sabbath on that day.

(10) So the Judeans were saying to the one having been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to take up your mat.” (11) But he answered them, “The one having made me well — that one said to me, ‘Take up your mat and walk.’” (12) They asked him, “Who is the man, the one having said to you, ‘Take up and walk’?” (13) But the one having been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had slipped away, a crowd being in the place. (14) After these things Jesus finds him in the temple and said to him, “Behold, you have become well; sin no longer, that something worse may not happen to you.” (15) The man went away and reported to the Judeans that Jesus is the one having made him well. (16) And for this the Judeans were persecuting Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath. (17) But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.” (18) Therefore, for this, the Judeans were seeking all the more to kill him, because he was not only loosing the Sabbath but also was calling God his own Father, making himself equal to God.

(19) Jesus therefore answered and was saying to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, the son is not able to do anything from himself, except what he sees the Father doing; for whatever that One does, these things the son also does likewise. (20) For the Father loves the son and shows him all things that He Himself does; and greater works than these He will show him, that you may marvel. (21) For just as the Father raises the dead and makes them alive, so also the son makes alive whomever he wishes. (22) For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the son, (23) that all might honor the son just as they honor the Father. The one not honoring the son does not honor the Father, the one having sent him. (24) Amen, amen, I say to you that the one hearing my word and believing the one having sent me has life age-lasting, and does not come into judgment, but has crossed over from death into life. (25) Amen, amen, I say to you that an hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the son of God, and those having heard will live. (26) For just as the Father has life in himself, so also He gave to the son to have life in himself; (27) and He gave him authority to do judgment, because he is a son of man. (28) Do not marvel at this, that an hour is coming in which all those in the tombs will hear his voice (29) and will come out — those having done good things to a resurrection of life, those having practiced base things to a resurrection of judgment. (30) I am not able to do anything from myself; just as I hear, I judge, and my judgment is righteous, because I do not seek my own will but the will of the one having sent me.”

(31) “If I bear witness about myself, my witness is not true. (32) Another is the one bearing witness about me, and I know that the witness which he bears about me is true. (33) You have sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. (34) But I do not receive the witness from a man, but I say these things that you might be saved. (35) That one was the burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for an hour in his light. (36) But I have a witness greater than John’s; for the works which the Father has given me, that I might complete them — these very works which I do — bear witness about me, that the Father has sent me. (37) And the Father, the one having sent me, that One has borne witness about me. You have neither heard His voice at any time nor seen His form, (38) and you do not have His word abiding in you, because you do not believe the one whom that One sent. (39) You search the scriptures, because you think in them to have life age-lasting; and those are the ones bearing witness about me — (40) and you do not wish to come to me, that you might have life. (41) I do not receive glory from men. (42) But I have known you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves. (43) I have come in the name of my Father, and you do not receive me; if another comes in his own name, you will receive that one. (44) How are you able to believe, receiving glory from one another — and the glory from the only God you do not seek? (45) Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; the one accusing you is Moses, in whom you have hoped. (46) For if you were believing Moses, you would believe me, for that one wrote about me. (47) But if you do not believe those writings of that one, how will you believe my words?”

John 6

(1) After these things Jesus went away across the sea of Galilee — the sea of Tiberias. (2) And a large crowd was following him, because they were beholding the signs which he was doing upon the ailing ones. (3) But Jesus went up onto the mountain, and there he was sitting with his disciples. (4) Now the Passover, the feast of the Judeans, was near. (5) Jesus then, having lifted up his eyes and having seen that a large crowd is coming toward him, says to Philip, “Where can we buy loaves, that these may eat?” (6) But he was saying this to test him, for he himself knew what he was about to do. (7) Philip answered him, “Loaves worth two hundred denarii are not sufficient for them, that each might take a little.” (8) One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, says to him, (9) “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what are these among so many?” (10) Jesus said, “Make the men recline.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men reclined, about five thousand in number. (11) Jesus then took the loaves, and having given thanks, distributed them to the reclining ones; likewise also of the fish, as much as they wanted. (12) And when they were filled, he says to his disciples, “Gather the fragments that abound, that nothing may be lost.” (13) So they gathered and filled twelve baskets of fragments from the five barley loaves, which were left over by those who had eaten. (14) The men then, having seen the sign that he did, were saying, “This is truly the prophet, the one coming into the world.” (15) Jesus then, having known that they are about to come and seize him, that they might make him king, withdrew again into the mountain, he alone.

(16) And when evening had come, his disciples went down to the sea (17) and, having entered a boat, were going across the sea to Capernaum. And darkness had already come, and Jesus had not yet come to them. (18) And the sea was being stirred up by a great wind blowing. (19) Having rowed then about twenty-five or thirty stadia, they behold Jesus walking upon the sea and coming near the boat, and they were afraid. (20) But he says to them, “I am he; do not fear.” (21) They wanted then to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat came to be at the land to which they were going.

(22) On the next day, the crowd standing across the sea saw that no other small boat was there, except one, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with his disciples, but his disciples had gone away alone. (23) But small boats came from Tiberias near the place where they ate the bread after the lord had given thanks. (24) When then the crowd saw that Jesus is not there, nor his disciples, they entered the small boats and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus. (25) And having found him across the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?” (26) Jesus answered them and said, “Amen, amen, I say to you, you seek me not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. (27) Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that remains for life age-lasting, which the son of the man will give you; for the Father, God, has set His seal on this one.”

(28) They said then to him, “What must we do, that we might work the works of God?” (29) Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God: that you believe in the one whom He has sent.” (30) They said then to him, “What sign then do you yourself do, that we might see and believe you? What do you work? (31) Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, just as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” (32) Jesus then said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, it was not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but my Father is giving you the true bread from heaven. (33) For the bread of God is the one coming down from heaven and giving life to the world.” (34) They said then to him, “Sir, always give us this bread.” (35) Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; the one coming to me will never hunger, and the one believing in me will never thirst. (36) But I told you that you have seen me, and yet you do not believe. (37) Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and the one coming to me I will never cast out. (38) For I have come down from heaven, not that I might do my own will, but the will of the one having sent me. (39) And this is the will of the one having sent me: that of everything He has given me, I should lose nothing, but raise it up on the last day. (40) For this is the will of my Father, that everyone beholding the son and believing in him should have life age-lasting, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

(41) The Judeans then were grumbling about him, because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” (42) And they were saying, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” (43) Jesus answered and said to them, “Do not grumble among yourselves. (44) No one is able to come to me unless the Father, the one having sent me, draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day. (45) It is written in the prophets, ‘And they will all be taught of god.’ Everyone having heard from the Father and having learned comes to me. (46) Not that anyone has seen the Father, except the one being from God; this one has seen the Father. (47) Amen, amen, I say to you, the one believing has life age-lasting. (48) I am the bread of life. (49) Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness and died. (50) This is the bread coming down from heaven, that anyone may eat of it and not die. (51) I am the living bread that came down from heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live for the age. And the bread that I will give is my flesh, for the life of the world.”

(52) The Judeans then were quarreling with one another, saying, “How is this one able to give us his flesh to eat?” (53) Jesus then said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the son of the man and drink his blood, you have no life in yourselves. (54) The one chewing my flesh and drinking my blood has life age-lasting, and I will raise him up on the last day. (55) For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. (56) The one chewing my flesh and drinking my blood abides in me, and I in him. (57) Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so the one feeding on me will also live because of me. (58) This is the bread that came down from heaven; not like the fathers who ate and died. The one chewing this bread will live for the age.” (59) He said these things while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.

(60) Many then of his disciples, having heard, said, “This saying is hard; who is able to hear it?” (61) But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples are grumbling about this, said to them, “Does this cause you to stumble? (62) Then what if you see the son of the man ascending where he was before? (63) The spirit is the life-giver; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life. (64) But there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who are the ones not believing, and who is the one who will hand him over. (65) And he was saying, “For this reason I have told you that no one is able to come to me, unless it has been granted to him by the Father.” (66) From this, many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him.

(67) Jesus then said to the twelve, “Do you also wish to go away?” (68) Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of life age-lasting, (69) and we have believed and have known that you are the holy one of God.” (70) Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the twelve? And one of you is a devil.” (71) But he was speaking of Judas, son of Simon Iscariot; for this one, being one of the twelve, was about to hand him over.

John 7

(1) And after these things Jesus was walking in Galilee, for he was not willing to walk in Judea, because the Judeans were seeking to kill him. (2) Now the feast of the Judeans, the Tabernacles, was near. (3) So his brothers said to him, “Move on from here and go into Judea, that your disciples also may see your works that you do. (4) For no one does anything in secret and seeks to be in openness. If you do these things, manifest yourself to the world.” (5) For not even his brothers were believing in him. (6) Jesus then says to them, “My time has not yet come; but your time is always ready. (7) The world is not able to hate you, but it hates me, because I bear witness about it that its works are evil. (8) You go up to the feast; I am not going up to this feast, because my time has not yet been fulfilled.” (9) And having said these things, he remained in Galilee. (10) But when his brothers went up to the feast, then he also went up, not openly, but as in secret. (11) The Judeans then were seeking him at the feast and were saying, “Where is that one?” (12) And there was much murmuring about him among the crowds; some were saying, “He is good,” but others were saying, “No, but he deceives the crowd.” (13) No one, however, was speaking openly about him because of the fear of the Judeans.

(14) Already, the feast being half over, Jesus went up into the temple and was teaching. (15) The Judeans then were marveling, saying, “How does this one know letters, not having learned?” (16) Jesus then answered them and said, “My teaching is not mine, but of the one having sent me. (17) If anyone wants to do his will, he will know about the teaching, whether it is from God, or I speak from myself. (18) The one speaking from himself seeks his own glory; but the one seeking the glory of the one having sent him — this one is true, and there is no unrighteousness in him. (19) Has not Moses given you the law? And no one of you does the law. Why do you seek to kill me?” (20) The crowd answered, “You have a demon. Who seeks to kill you?” (21) Jesus answered and said to them, “I did one work, and you all marvel. (22) For this reason Moses has given you circumcision — not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers — and on a Sabbath you circumcise a man. (23) If a man receives circumcision on a Sabbath, that the law of Moses might not be loosed, are you angry at me because I made a whole man well on a Sabbath? (24) Do not judge according to appearance, but judge the righteous judgment.”

(25) Some then of the Jerusalemites were saying, “Is this not the one whom they seek to kill? (26) And behold, he speaks openly, and they say nothing to him. Perhaps the rulers truly knew that this one is the Christ? (27) But we know this one, where he is from; but the Christ, whenever he may come, no one knows where he is from.” (28) Jesus then cried out in the temple, teaching and saying, “Both you know me and you know where I am from; and I have not come from myself, but the one having sent me is true, whom you do not know. (29) I know him, because I am from him, and that one sent me.” (30) They were seeking then to seize him, and no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come. (31) And from the crowd many believed in him and were saying, “When the Christ comes, will he do more signs than this one did?” (32) The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things about him, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers that they might seize him. (33) Jesus then said, “Yet a little time I am with you, and I go to the one having sent me. (34) You will seek me and will not find me, and where I am, you are not able to come.” (35) The Judeans then said to themselves, “Where is this one about to go, that we will not find him? He is not about to go into the Dispersion of the Greeks and teach the Greeks, is he? (36) What is this word that he said, ‘You will seek me and will not find me, and where I am, you are not able to come’?”

(37) Now in the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus was standing and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me, and let him drink. (38) The one believing in me, as the scripture said, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his inner being.’” (39) But this he said about the spirit, which those having believed in him were about to receive; for the spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. (40) From the crowd then, having heard these words, some were saying, “This one is truly the prophet.” (41) Others were saying, “This one is the Christ.” But they were saying, “The Christ does not come from Galilee, does he? (42) Has not the scripture said that the Christ comes from the seed of David and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?” (43) A division then came to be in the crowd because of him. (44) And some of them were willing to seize him, but no one laid hands on him.

(45) The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, “Why did you not bring him?” (46) The officers answered, “Never did a man speak thus.” (47) The Pharisees then answered them, “Have you also been deceived? (48) Has any one of the rulers believed in him, or of the Pharisees? (49) But this crowd, not knowing the law, is accursed.” (50) Nicodemus — the one having come to him earlier, being one of them — says to them, (51) “Our law does not judge the man, does it, unless it first hears from him and knows what he does?” (52) They answered and said to him, “You are not also from Galilee, are you? Search and see that a prophet does not arise from Galilee.” (53) And each went to his own house.

John 8

(12) Again therefore Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. The one following me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (13) Therefore the Pharisees said to him, “You bear witness about yourself; your witness is not true.” (14) Jesus answered and said to them, “Even if I bear witness about myself, my witness is true, because I know where I came from and where I am going. But you do not know where I come from or where I am going. (15) You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one. (16) But even if I do judge, my judgment is true, because I am not alone, but I and the Father who sent me. (17) And in your law it has been written that the witness of two men is true. (18) I am the one bearing witness about myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness about me.” (19) So they were saying to him, “Where is your father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also.” (20) He spoke these words in the treasury, teaching in the temple, and no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come.

(21) Then he said again to them, “I am going away, and you will seek me, and you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.” (22) So the Judeans were saying, “Will he kill himself, because he says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?” (23) And he was saying to them, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. (24) Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am he, you will die in your sins.” (25) So they were saying to him, “Who are you?” Jesus said to them, “Why do I even speak to you at all? (26) I have many things to speak and to judge about you; but the one who sent me is true, and I speak to the world the things that I heard from him.” (27) They did not know that he was speaking to them about the Father. (28) So Jesus said to them, “When you lift up the son of the man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing from myself, but I speak these things just as the Father taught me. (29) And the one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, because I always do the things that are pleasing to him.” (30) As he was speaking these things, many believed in him.

(31) So Jesus was saying to the Judeans who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, (32) and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (33) They answered him, “We are seed of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. How do you say, ‘You will become free’?” (34) Jesus answered them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, everyone doing sin is a slave of sin. (35) And the slave does not remain in the house into the age; the son remains into the age. (36) Therefore if the son sets you free, you will be truly free. (37) I know that you are seed of Abraham; but you seek to kill me, because my word has no room in you. (38) I speak the things that I have seen with the Father; and you do the things that you have heard from your father.” (39) They answered and said to him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus says to them, “If you are children of Abraham, you would do the works of Abraham. (40) But now you seek to kill me, a man who has spoken to you the truth, which I heard from God; Abraham did not do this. (41) You do the works of your father.” They said to him, “We were not born from fornication; we have one father: God.” (42) Jesus said to them, “If God were your father, you would love me, for I came out from God and have come. For I have not come from myself, but that one sent me. (43) Why do you not understand my speech? Because you cannot hear my word. (44) You are from the father — the devil — and you want to do the desires of your father. That one was a man-killer from the beginning and has not stood in the truth, because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks the lie, he speaks from his own, because he is a liar and the father of it. (45) But because I speak the truth, you do not believe me. (46) Who of you convicts me of sin? If I speak truth, why do you not believe me? (47) The one who is from God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not hear, because you are not from God.”

(48) The Judeans answered and said to him, “Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?” (49) Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon; but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me. (50) I do not seek my glory; there is one who seeks and judges. (51) Amen, amen, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death into the age.” (52) The Judeans said to him, “Now we know that you have a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets; and you say, ‘If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death into the age.’ (53) You are not greater than our father Abraham, are you, who died? And the prophets died. Who do you make yourself to be?” (54) Jesus answered, “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’ (55) And you have not known him; but I know him. If I say that I do not know him, I will be a liar like you. But I know him and keep his word. (56) Abraham your father rejoiced that he might see my day, and he saw it and was glad.” (57) So the Judeans said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?” (58) Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, before Abraham came to be, I am he.” (59) Therefore they picked up stones to throw at him; but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.

John 9

(1) And passing along, he saw a man blind from birth. (2) And his disciples asked him, saying, “Rabbi, who sinned, this one or his parents, that he might be born blind?” (3) Jesus answered, “Neither this one sinned nor his parents, but that the works of God might be manifested in him. (4) It is necessary for us to work the works of the one having sent me while it is day; night comes, when no one is able to work. (5) When I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” (6) Having said these things, he spat on the ground and made mud from the spittle, and applied the mud on his eyes. (7) And he said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” — which is interpreted “sent.” He went away then and washed and came seeing. (8) Therefore the neighbors and those beholding him formerly, that he was a beggar, were saying, “Is this not the one sitting and begging?” (9) Others were saying, “This is he.” Others were saying, “No, but he is like him.” That one was saying, “I am he.” (10) So they were saying to him, “How then were your eyes opened?” (11) That one answered, “The man being called Jesus made mud and applied it to my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ Having gone away then and having washed, I received sight.” (12) And they said to him, “Where is that one?” He says, “I do not know.”

(13) They bring him to the Pharisees — the one formerly blind. (14) Now it was a Sabbath on which day Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. (15) Again therefore the Pharisees were also asking him how he received sight. And he said to them, “He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.” (16) Therefore some of the Pharisees were saying, “This man is not from god, because he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others were saying, “How is a sinful man able to do such signs?” And there was a division among them. (17) So they say to the blind one again, “What do you say about him, that he opened your eyes?” And he said, “He is a prophet.” (18) Therefore the Judeans did not believe about him, that he was blind and received sight, until they called the parents of the one having received sight. (19) And they asked them, saying, “Is this your son, whom you say was born blind? How then does he now see?” (20) Therefore his parents answered and said, “We know that this one is our son, and that he was born blind. (21) But how he now sees, we do not know; or who opened his eyes, we do not know. Ask him; he has age; he will speak about himself.” (22) These things his parents said because they were fearing the Judeans; for the Judeans had already agreed that if anyone should confess him as Christ, he would be put out of the synagogue. (23) For this his parents said, “He has age; ask him.”

(24) So they called the man a second time who was blind and said to him, “Give glory to God; we know that this man is a sinner.” (25) Therefore that one answered, “If he is a sinner, I do not know; one thing I know: that being blind, now I see.” (26) So they said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” (27) He answered them, “I told you already, and you did not hear; why do you wish to hear again? Do you also wish to become his disciples?” (28) And they reviled him and said, “You are a disciple of that one; but we are disciples of Moses. (29) We know that God has spoken to Moses; but this one, we do not know where he is from.” (30) The man answered and said to them, “In this indeed is the marvelous thing, that you do not know where he is from, and he opened my eyes. (31) We know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is god-fearing and does his will, he hears him. (32) From the age it has not been heard that anyone opened the eyes of one blind from birth. (33) If this one were not from god, he would not be able to do anything.” (34) They answered and said to him, “You were born entirely in sins, and you teach us?” And they cast him out.

(35) Jesus heard that they cast him out, and having found him, said, “Do you believe in the son of the man?” (36) That one answered and said, “And who is he, sir, that I might believe in him?” (37) Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, and the one speaking with you is he.” (38) And he said, “I believe, lord,” and paid homage to him. (39) And Jesus said, “For judgment I came into this world, that those not seeing might see, and those seeing might become blind.” (40) Those of the Pharisees being with him heard these things and said to him, “Are we also blind?” (41) Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you say, ‘We see,’ your sin remains.”

John 10

(1) “Amen, amen, I say to you, the one not entering through the door into the sheepfold of the sheep, but climbing up from another place — that one is a thief and an insurgent. (2) But the one entering through the door is a shepherd of the sheep. (3) To this one the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. (4) When he leads out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, because they know his voice. (5) But they will never follow a stranger, but will flee from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers.” (6) Jesus spoke this figure to them, but they did not know what the things were that he was speaking to them.

(7) So Jesus said again, “Amen, amen, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. (8) All who came before me are thieves and insurgents, but the sheep did not hear them. (9) I am the door; if anyone enters through me, he will be saved, and he will enter and go out and find pasture. (10) The thief does not come except to steal and slaughter and destroy. I came that they might have life and have abundance. (11) I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. (12) The hired hand, who is not the shepherd, to whom the sheep do not belong, sees the wolf coming and abandons the sheep and flees — and the wolf snatches them and scatters them — (13) because he is a hired hand and it does not matter to him about the sheep. (14) I am the good shepherd, and I know my own, and my own know me, (15) just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep. (16) And I have other sheep that are not of this sheepfold; it is necessary for me to lead them, and they will hear my voice, and they will come to be one flock, one shepherd. (17) For this the Father loves me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. (18) No one takes it from me, but I lay it down from myself. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it again; this commandment I received from my Father.”

(19) A division came to be again among the Judeans because of these words. (20) Many of them were saying, “He has a demon and raves; why do you listen to him?” (21) Others were saying, “These are not the words of one possessed by a demon. A demon is not able to open the eyes of the blind, is he?”

(22) Then came the Dedication in Jerusalem; it was winter. (23) And Jesus was walking in the temple, in the colonnade of Solomon. (24) The Judeans then surrounded him and were saying to him, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.” (25) Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in the name of my Father — these bear witness about me. (26) But you do not believe, because you are not of my sheep. (27) My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me; (28) and I give them life age-lasting, and they will never perish for the age, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. (29) My Father — that which He has given me — is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. (30) I and the Father are one.”

(31) The Judeans again took up stones, that they might stone him. (32) Jesus answered them, “I showed you many good works from the Father; for which work of them do you stone me?” (33) The Judeans answered him, “We do not stone you for a good work, but for blasphemy, and because you, being a man, make yourself god.” (34) Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your law, ‘I said, you are gods’? (35) If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came to be — and the scripture is not able to be loosed — (36) do you say of him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You blaspheme,’ because I said, ‘I am a son of God’? (37) If I do not do the works of my Father, do not believe me. (38) But if I do, even if you do not believe me, believe the works, that you might know and continue knowing that the Father is in me and I in the Father.” (39) They were seeking again to seize him, and he went out of their hand.

(40) And he went away again across the Jordan, to the place where John was at first baptizing, and he remained there. (41) And many came to him and were saying that John indeed did no sign, but all things that John said about this one were true. (42) And many believed in him there.

John 11

(1) Now a certain man was ailing, Lazarus of Bethany, of the village of Mary and Martha his sister. (2) And it was Mary the one having anointed the lord with ointment and having wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ailing. (3) So the sisters sent to him, saying, “Lord, behold, the one whom you love is ailing.” (4) But having heard, Jesus said, “This infirmity is not toward death, but for the glory of God, that the son of God might be glorified through it.” (5) And Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. (6) When then he heard that he is ailing, then indeed he remained in the place where he was two days. (7) Then after this he says to the disciples, “Let us go into Judea again.” (8) The disciples say to him, “Rabbi, just now the Judeans were seeking to stone you, and again you go there?” (9) Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. (10) But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.” (11) He said these things, and after this he says to them, “Lazarus our friend has fallen asleep; but I go, that I might wake him.” (12) So the disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will be saved.” (13) But Jesus had spoken about his death; but those thought that he was speaking about the sleep of slumber. (14) Then therefore Jesus said to them plainly, “Lazarus died. (15) And I rejoice for your sakes, that you might believe, because I was not there; but let us go to him.” (16) Then Thomas, the one being called Didymus, said to the fellow-disciples, “Let us go also, that we may die with him.”

(17) Having come then, Jesus found him having already been four days in the tomb. (18) And Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia away. (19) And many of the Judeans had come to Martha and Mary, that they might console them about the brother. (20) So Martha, when she heard that Jesus is coming, met him; but Mary was sitting in the house. (21) Martha then said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. (22) But even now I know that whatever you might ask God, God will give you.” (23) Jesus says to her, “Your brother will rise.” (24) Martha says to him, “I know that he will rise in the resurrection on the last day.” (25) Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one believing in me, even if he dies, will live; (26) and everyone living and believing in me will never die for the age. Do you believe this?” (27) She says to him, “Yes, lord; I have believed that you are the Christ, the son of God, the one coming into the world.” (28) And having said this, she went away and called Mary her sister, privately having said, “The teacher is present and calls you.” (29) That one, when she heard, rose quickly and was coming to him. (30) But Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha met him. (31) The Judeans then, the ones being with her in the house and consoling her, having seen Mary that she rose quickly and went out, followed her, thinking that she goes to the tomb, that she might weep there. (32) So Mary, when she came to where Jesus was, having seen him, fell at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” (33) Jesus then, when he saw her weeping and the Judeans having come together with her weeping, was deeply moved in the spirit and troubled himself, (34) and said, “Where have you put him?” They say to him, “Lord, come and see.” (35) Jesus wept. (36) So the Judeans were saying, “Behold, how he loved him!” (37) But some of them said, “Was this one, the one having opened the eyes of the blind, not able to do that this one also might not die?”

(38) Jesus then, again being deeply moved in himself, comes to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone was lying upon it. (39) Jesus says, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the one having died, says to him, “Lord, already he stinks, for he is four days.” (40) Jesus says to her, “Did I not say to you that if you believe you will see the glory of God?” (41) So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes upward and said, “Father, I thank You that You heard me. (42) And I knew that You always hear me; but because of the crowd standing around I said it, that they might believe that You sent me.” (43) And having said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” (44) The one having died came out, having been bound feet and hands with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a face-cloth. Jesus says to them, “Untie him and let him go.”

(45) Many then of the Judeans, the ones having come to Mary and having beheld what he did, believed in him. (46) But some of them went away to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus did. (47) So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council and were saying, “What are we doing? For this man does many signs. (48) If we leave him thus, all will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.” (49) But one certain of them, Caiaphas, being chief priest of that year, said to them, “You know nothing, (50) nor do you reckon that it is expedient for you that one man die for the people, and not the whole nation perish.” (51) But this he did not say from himself; but being chief priest of that year, he prophesied that Jesus was about to die for the nation, (52) and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather the scattered children of God into one. (53) From that day therefore they plotted to kill him. (54) Jesus therefore no longer walked openly among the Judeans, but went away from there into the region near the wilderness, to a city being called Ephraim, and there he remained with his disciples. (55) And the Passover of the Judeans was near, and many went up to Jerusalem from the country before the Passover, that they might purify themselves. (56) So they were seeking Jesus and were saying among one another, standing in the temple, “What does it seem to you? That he will not come to the feast at all?” (57) And the chief priests and the Pharisees had given commandments, that if anyone knows where he is, he should report it, so that they might seize him.

John 12

(1) Then Jesus, six days before the Passover, came into Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus raised from the dead. (2) So they made him a supper there, and Martha was serving; and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him. (3) Then Mary, having taken a pound of costly genuine nard ointment, anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment. (4) Then Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples, the one about to hand him over, says, (5) “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” (6) But he said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having the money-bag, he was carrying off what was put into it. (7) Jesus then said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of my burial. (8) For you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.” (9) Then a large crowd of the Judeans came to know that he is there, and they came not only because of Jesus, but that they might also see Lazarus, whom he raised from the dead. (10) And the chief priests plotted that they might also kill Lazarus, (11) because many of the Judeans were going away because of him and were believing in Jesus.

(12) On the next day, the large crowd having come to the feast, having heard that Jesus is coming into Jerusalem, (13) took palm branches and went out to meet him and were crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is the one coming in the name of the Lord — even the king of Israel!” (14) And Jesus, having found a young donkey, sat upon it, just as it is written: (15) “Do not fear, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting upon a donkey’s colt.” (16) His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about him and that they did these things to him. (17) Then the crowd being with him was bearing witness that he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead. (18) Because of this, the crowd also met him, because they heard that he had done this sign. (19) So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are gaining nothing; look, the world has gone after him.”

(20) And there were some Greeks among those going up, that they might worship at the feast. (21) These then came to Philip, the one from Bethsaida of Galilee, and were asking him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” (22) Philip comes and tells Andrew; Andrew and Philip come and tell Jesus. (23) And Jesus answers them, saying, “The hour has come, that the son of the man might be glorified. (24) Amen, amen, I say to you, unless the grain of wheat, having fallen into the ground, dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. (25) The one loving his life loses it, and the one hating his life in this world will guard it into life age-lasting. (26) If anyone serves me, let him follow me; and where I am, there also my servant will be. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him. (27) Now my life has been troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this reason I came to this hour. (28) Father, glorify Your name.” Then a voice came from heaven: “I glorified, and I will glorify again.” (29) Then the crowd standing and having heard was saying that it had thundered; others were saying, “An angel has spoken to him.” (30) Jesus answered and said, “This voice has not come for my sake, but for your sake. (31) Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. (32) And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all to myself.” (33) But he was saying this, signifying of what death he was about to die. (34) Then the crowd answered him, “We have heard from the law that the Christ remains for the age; and how do you say that the son of the man must be lifted up? Who is this son of the man?” (35) Jesus then said to them, “Yet a little while the light is among you. Walk while you have the light, that darkness might not overtake you; and the one walking in the darkness does not know where he goes. (36) While you have the light, believe in the light, that you might become sons of light.” Jesus spoke these things, and having gone away, he hid himself from them.

(37) And though he had done so many signs before them, they were not believing in him, (38) that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he said: “Lord, who believed our report? And the arm of the Lord, to whom was it revealed?” (39) Because of this, they were not able to believe, because again Isaiah said: (40) “He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, that they might not see with their eyes and understand with their heart and turn, and I will heal them.” (41) Isaiah said these things because he saw his glory and spoke about him. (42) Nevertheless, however, even from the rulers many believed in him; but because of the Pharisees they were not confessing, that they might not be put out of the synagogue; (43) for they loved the glory of men more than the glory of God.

(44) And Jesus cried out and said, “The one believing in me does not believe in me, but in the one having sent me. (45) And the one beholding me beholds the one having sent me. (46) I have come as light into the world, that everyone believing in me might not remain in the darkness. (47) And if anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come that I might judge the world, but that I might save the world. (48) The one rejecting me and not receiving my words has the one judging him: the word which I spoke — that one will judge him on the last day. (49) For I did not speak from myself, but the Father, the one having sent me, has given me a commandment — what I might say and what I might speak. (50) And I know that His commandment is life age-lasting. What therefore I speak, just as the Father has said to me, so I speak.”

John 13

(1) Before the feast of the Passover, Jesus, having known that his hour had come, that he might pass over from this world to the Father — having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. (2) And during supper, the devil already having put into the heart that Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, might hand him over — (3) Jesus, having known that the Father had given all things into his hands and that he came out from God and goes to God — (4) rises from the supper and lays down his garments, and having taken a towel, girded himself. (5) Then he puts water into the basin and began to wash the feet of the disciples and to wipe them with the towel with which he was girded.

(6) He comes then to Simon Peter. He says to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” (7) Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you do not know now, but you will know after these things.” (8) Peter says to him, “You will never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with me.” (9) Simon Peter says to him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.” (10) Jesus says to him, “The one having bathed has no need, except the feet, to be washed, but is wholly clean; and you are clean, but not all.” (11) For he knew the one handing him over; for this he said, “Not all of you are clean.”

(12) When then he washed their feet and took his garments and reclined again, he said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? (13) You call me the teacher and the lord, and you say well, for I am. (14) If then I, the lord and the teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. (15) For I gave you a pattern, that just as I did to you, you also might do. (16) Amen, amen, I say to you, a slave is not greater than his lord, nor a sent one greater than the one having sent him. (17) If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.

(18) I do not speak about all of you. I know whom I chose; but that the scripture might be fulfilled: ‘The one chewing my bread lifted up his heel against me.’ (19) From now I tell you before it comes to be, that when it comes to be you might believe that I am he. (20) Amen, amen, I say to you, the one receiving anyone I send receives me; and the one receiving me receives the one having sent me.”

(21) Having said these things, Jesus was troubled in the spirit and bore witness and said, “Amen, amen, I say to you that one of you will hand me over.” (22) The disciples were looking at one another, being perplexed about whom he speaks. (23) One of his disciples was reclining in the bosom of Jesus, whom Jesus loved. (24) Simon Peter nods to this one to inquire who it might be about whom he speaks. (25) Having leaned then thus upon the chest of Jesus, that one says to him, “Lord, who is it?” (26) Jesus answers, “That one is the one to whom I will dip the morsel and give it to him.” Having dipped then the morsel, he takes and gives it to Judas, son of Simon Iscariot. (27) And after the morsel, then the Adversary entered into that one. Jesus then says to him, “What you do, do more quickly.” (28) But no one of those reclining knew toward what he said this to him. (29) For some were thinking, since Judas had the money-bag, that Jesus says to him, “Buy whatever we have need of for the feast,” or that he might give something to the poor. (30) Having taken then the morsel, that one went out immediately. And it was night.

(31) When then he went out, Jesus says, “Now the son of the man was glorified, and God was glorified in him. (32) If God was glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and will glorify him immediately. (33) Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just as I said to the Judeans, ‘Where I go, you are not able to come,’ I also say to you now. (34) A new commandment I give to you: that you love one another; just as I loved you, that you also love one another. (35) By this all will know that you are my disciples: if you have love among one another.”

(36) Simon Peter says to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered him, “Where I go, you are not able to follow me now, but you will follow later.” (37) Peter says to him, “Lord, why am I not able to follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” (38) Jesus answers, “Will you lay down your life for me? Amen, amen, I say to you, a rooster will not crow until you deny me three times.”

John 14

(1) “Do not let your heart be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. (2) In my Father’s house are many dwelling-places; if not, I would have told you, that I go to prepare a place for you. (3) And if I go and prepare a place for you, I am coming again and will receive you to myself, that where I am, you also might be. (4) And where I go, you know the way.”

(5) Thomas says to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going; how are we able to know the way?” (6) Jesus says to him, “I am the way and the truth and the life; no one comes to the Father except through me. (7) If you had known me, you would have known my Father also; from now you know him and have seen him.” (8) Philip says to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” (9) Jesus says to him, “Have I been with you so much time, and you have not known me, Philip? The one having seen me has seen the Father. How do you say, ‘Show us the Father’? (10) Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak from myself; but the Father remaining in me does his works. (11) Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if not, believe because of the works themselves. (12) Amen, amen, I say to you, the one believing in me will also do the works that I do; and he will do greater than these, because I go to the Father. (13) And whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father might be glorified in the son. (14) If you ask anything in my name, I will do it.”

(15) “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. (16) And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another helper, that it might be with you into the age — (17) the spirit of the truth, which the world is not able to receive, because it does not behold it nor know it. You know it, because it remains with you and will be in you. (18) I will not leave you orphans; I am coming to you. (19) Yet a little while and the world no longer beholds me; but you behold me, because I live and you will live. (20) In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. (21) The one having my commandments and keeping them — that one is the one loving me; and the one loving me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and will show myself to him.”

(22) Judas — not Iscariot — says to him, “Lord, and what has happened that you are about to show yourself to us and not to the world?” (23) Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make a dwelling with him. (24) The one not loving me does not keep my words; and the word which you hear is not mine but the Father’s, the one having sent me.”

(25) “These things I have spoken to you, remaining with you. (26) But the helper, the holy spirit, which the Father will send in my name — it will teach you all things and will remind you of all things which I said to you. (27) Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be afraid. (28) You heard that I said to you, ‘I go away, and I am coming to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced that I go to the Father, because the Father is greater than me. (29) And now I have told you before it comes to be, that when it comes to be you might believe. (30) I will no longer speak much with you, for the ruler of the world is coming, and he has nothing in me. (31) But that the world might know that I love the Father, and just as the Father commanded me, so I do. Rise, let us go from here.”

John 15

(1) “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. (2) Every branch in me not bearing fruit, he takes away; and every one bearing fruit, he prunes it, that it might bear more fruit. (3) Already you are clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. (4) Abide in me, and I in you. Just as the branch is not able to bear fruit from itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you, unless you abide in me. (5) I am the vine; you are the branches. The one abiding in me, and I in him — this one bears much fruit, for apart from me you are able to do nothing. (6) If anyone does not abide in me, he is thrown outside like the branch and is dried up; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and it is burned. (7) If you abide in me and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will come to be for you. (8) In this my Father was glorified: that you might bear much fruit and become my disciples. (9) Just as the Father loved me, I also loved you. Abide in my love. (10) If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love; just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. (11) These things I have spoken to you, that my joy might be in you, and your joy might be fulfilled.”

(12) “This is my commandment: that you love one another, just as I loved you. (13) Greater love has no one than this: that someone lay down his life for his friends. (14) You are my friends if you do what I command you. (15) No longer do I call you slaves, because the slave does not know what his lord does; but I have called you friends, because all things that I heard from my Father I made known to you. (16) You did not choose me, but I chose you and placed you, that you might go and bear fruit, and your fruit might remain; that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he might give you. (17) These things I command you, that you love one another.”

(18) “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before you. (19) If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, for this the world hates you. (20) Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A slave is not greater than his lord.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also; if they kept my word, they will keep yours also. (21) But they will do all these things against you because of my name, because they do not know the one having sent me. (22) If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. (23) The one hating me hates my Father also. (24) If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not have sin; but now they have both seen and hated both me and my Father. (25) But that the word might be fulfilled, the one written in their law: ‘They hated me without a cause.’ (26) When the helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father — the spirit of the truth, which proceeds from the Father — that one will bear witness about me. (27) And you also bear witness, because you are with me from the beginning.”

John 16

(1) “These things I have spoken to you, that you might not be caused to stumble. (2) They will make you out-of-synagogue; but an hour is coming that everyone having killed you might think to offer cultic service to God. (3) And they will do these things because they did not know the Father nor me. (4) But I have spoken these things to you, that when their hour comes you might remember them — that I told you. But I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you.

(5) “But now I go to the one having sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ (6) But because I have spoken these things to you, grief has filled your heart. (7) But I tell you the truth: it is expedient for you that I go away. For if I do not go away, the helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. (8) And having come, that one will convict the world concerning sin and concerning righteousness and concerning judgment. (9) Concerning sin, because they do not believe in me. (10) Concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you no longer behold me. (11) Concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged. (12) I still have many things to say to you, but you are not able to bear them now. (13) But when that one comes — the spirit of the truth — he will guide you in all the truth; for he will not speak from himself, but he will speak whatever he hears, and he will announce to you the things that are coming. (14) That one will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and will announce it to you. (15) All things that the Father has are mine; for this I said that he takes from what is mine and will announce it to you.

(16) “A little while, and you no longer behold me; and again a little while, and you will see me.” (17) Then some of his disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, ‘A little while, and you do not behold me; and again a little while, and you will see me’ and, ‘because I go to the Father’?” (18) So they were saying, “What is this that he says, ‘The little while’? We do not know what he is speaking.” (19) Jesus knew that they were wanting to ask him, and he said to them, “Are you seeking among one another about this, that I said, ‘A little while, and you do not behold me; and again a little while, and you will see me’? (20) Amen, amen, I say to you that you will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice; you will be grieved, but your grief will come to be joy. (21) The woman, when she gives birth, has grief, because her hour has come; but when she bears the child, she no longer remembers the affliction, because of the joy that a man was born into the world. (22) And you therefore now indeed have grief; but again I will see you, and your heart will rejoice, and no one takes your joy away from you. (23) And in that day you will ask me nothing. Amen, amen, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in my name, he will give you. (24) Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy might be fulfilled.”

(25) “These things I have spoken to you in figures. An hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures, but I will announce to you plainly about the Father. (26) In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father concerning you; (27) for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came out from God. (28) I came out from the Father and have come into the world; again I leave the world and go to the Father.” (29) His disciples say, “Behold, now you speak plainly, and you say no figure. (30) Now we know that you know all things and have no need that anyone ask you; in this we believe that you came out from god.” (31) Jesus answered them, “Now do you believe? (32) Behold, an hour is coming, and has come, that you will be scattered, each to his own things, and you will leave me alone; and I am not alone, because the Father is with me. (33) These things I have spoken to you, that in me you might have peace. In the world you have affliction; but take courage: I have overcome the world.”

John 17

(1) Jesus spoke these things, and having lifted up his eyes to heaven, said, “Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your son, that the son might glorify You, (2) just as You gave him authority over all flesh, that everything which You have given him, he might give to them — life age-lasting. (3) And this is the life age-lasting: that they might know You, the only true God, and him whom You sent — Jesus Christ. (4) I glorified You on the earth; I completed the work which You have given me, that I might do it. (5) And now glorify me, You, Father, with Yourself — with the glory which I had before the world was, with You.”

(6) “I manifested Your name to the men whom You gave me out of the world. They were Yours, and You gave them to me, and they have kept Your word. (7) Now they have known that all things, as many as You have given me, are from You. (8) For the words which You gave me, I have given to them; and they received them, and they knew truly that I came out from You, and they believed that You sent me. (9) I ask concerning them; I do not ask concerning the world, but concerning those whom You have given me, because they are Yours. (10) And all my things are Yours, and Your things are mine; and I have been glorified in them. (11) And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep them in Your name, which You have given me, that they might be one, just as we. (12) When I was with them, I was keeping them in Your name, which You have given me; and I guarded them, and none of them perished except the son of destruction, that the scripture might be fulfilled. (13) But now I come to You; and I speak these things in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves. (14) I have given them Your word; and the world hated them, because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. (15) I do not ask that You might take them out of the world, but that You might keep them out of the evil. (16) They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. (17) Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth. (18) Just as You sent me into the world, I also sent them into the world. (19) And for them I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified in truth.”

(20) “And I do not ask concerning these only, but also concerning those believing in me through their word, (21) that they all might be one, just as You, Father, are in me, and I in You — that they also might be in us — that the world might believe that You sent me. (22) And I have given them the glory which You have given me, that they might be one, just as we are one. (23) I in them, and You in me — that they might be brought to completion into one — that the world might know that You sent me and loved them just as You loved me. (24) Father, I will that, where I am, those also whom You have given me might be with me, that they might behold my glory, which You gave me, because You loved me before the foundation of the world. (25) Righteous Father, the world did not know You; but I knew You, and these knew that You sent me. (26) And I made known to them Your name, and I will make it known, that the love with which You loved me might be in them, and I in them.”

John 18

(1) Having said these things, Jesus went out with his disciples across the torrent of the Kidron, where there was a garden, into which he entered, he and his disciples. (2) And Judas, the one handing him over, also knew the place, because Jesus often gathered there with his disciples. (3) So Judas, having taken the cohort and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, comes there with lanterns and torches and weapons. (4) Jesus then, knowing all the things coming upon him, went out and says to them, “Whom do you seek?” (5) They answered him, “Jesus the Nazarean.” He says to them, “I am he.” And Judas, the one handing him over, was standing with them. (6) So when he said to them, “I am he,” they went back and fell to the ground. (7) Again then he asked them, “Whom do you seek?” And they said, “Jesus the Nazarean.” (8) Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he; if you seek me, allow these to go” — (9) that the word might be fulfilled which he said: “Of those whom You have given me, I lost not one.” (10) Simon Peter then, having a sword, drew it and struck the servant of the chief priest and cut off his right ear. And the servant’s name was Malchus. (11) Jesus then said to Peter, “Put the sword into the sheath. The cup which the Father has given me — shall I not drink it?”

(12) Then the cohort and the commander and the officers of the Judeans seized Jesus and bound him. (13) And they led him first to Annas — for he was father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was chief priest of that year. (14) And Caiaphas was the one having counseled the Judeans that it is expedient for one man to die for the people. (15) And Simon Peter was following Jesus, and another disciple. And that disciple was known to the chief priest, and entered with Jesus into the courtyard of the chief priest. (16) But Peter was standing at the door outside. So the other disciple, the one known to the chief priest, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper and brought Peter in. (17) The doorkeeper girl says then to Peter, “You are not also one of this man’s disciples, are you?” That one says, “I am not.” (18) And the servants and the officers were standing there, having made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and were warming themselves; and Peter was also with them, standing and warming himself. (19) The chief priest then asked Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching. (20) Jesus answered him, “I have spoken openly to the world; I always taught in synagogue and in the temple, where all the Judeans come together, and in secret I spoke nothing. (21) Why do you ask me? Ask those who heard what I spoke to them. Behold, they know what I said.” (22) And having said these things, one of the officers standing by gave a slap to Jesus, having said, “Do you answer the chief priest thus?” (23) Jesus answered him, “If I spoke badly, bear witness about the evil; but if well, why do you strike me?” (24) Annas then sent him, bound, to Caiaphas the chief priest. (25) And Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “You are not also one of his disciples, are you?” He denied and said, “I am not.” (26) One of the servants of the chief priest, a relative of the one whose ear Peter cut off, says, “Did I not see you in the garden with him?” (27) Again then Peter denied, and immediately a rooster crowed.

(28) Then they lead Jesus from Caiaphas into the praetorium. And it was early; and they themselves did not enter into the praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but might eat the Passover. (29) So Pilate went out to them and says, “What accusation do you bring against this man?” (30) They answered and said to him, “If this one were not doing evil, we would not have delivered him to you.” (31) Pilate then said to them, “Take him yourselves, and judge him according to your law.” The Judeans said to him, “It is not lawful for us to kill anyone” — (32) that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he said, signifying of what death he was about to die. (33) Pilate then entered into the praetorium again and called Jesus and said to him, “Are you the king of the Judeans?” (34) Jesus answered, “Do you say this from yourself, or did others tell you about me?” (35) Pilate answered, “I am not a Judean, am I? Your nation and the chief priests delivered you to me. What have you done?” (36) Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my officers would have fought, that I might not be delivered to the Judeans; but now my kingdom is not from here.” (37) Pilate then said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, that I might bear witness to the truth. Everyone being of the truth hears my voice.” (38) Pilate says to him, “What is truth?” And having said this, he went out again to the Judeans and says to them, “I find no fault in him. (39) But it is a custom for you that I release one to you at the Passover. Do you wish, then, that I release to you the king of the Judeans?” (40) They cried out again, saying, “Not this one, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was an insurgent.

John 19

(1) Then therefore Pilate took Jesus and flogged him. (2) And the soldiers, having plaited a crown out of thorns, put it on his head, and they clothed him in a purple garment. (3) And they were coming to him and saying, “Hail, king of the Judeans!” and they were giving him slaps. (4) And Pilate went out again and says to them, “Behold, I bring him out to you, that you might know that I find no fault in him.” (5) Jesus then came out outside, wearing the thorny crown and the purple garment. And he says to them, “Behold, the man!” (6) When therefore the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, saying, “Crucify! Crucify!” Pilate says to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify; for I find no fault in him.” (7) The Judeans answered him, “We have a law, and according to the law he ought to die, because he made himself a son of god.” (8) When therefore Pilate heard this word, he was more afraid. (9) And he entered into the praetorium again and says to Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no answer. (10) Pilate then says to him, “Do you not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you, and I have authority to crucify you?” (11) Jesus answered him, “You would have no authority over me unless it was given to you from above. Therefore the one handing me over to you has the greater sin.” (12) From this Pilate was seeking to release him. But the Judeans cried out, saying, “If you release this one, you are not a friend of Caesar. Everyone making himself a king speaks against Caesar.” (13) Therefore Pilate, having heard these words, led Jesus outside and sat down upon the judgment seat, at a place being called “The Pavement” — in Hebrew, Gabbatha. (14) Now it was the Preparation of the Passover; it was about the sixth hour. And he says to the Judeans, “Behold, your king!” (15) They cried out, “Take away, take away! Crucify him!” Pilate says to them, “Shall I crucify your king?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king except Caesar.” (16) Then therefore he delivered him to them, that he might be crucified. They took Jesus.

(17) And carrying the cross for himself, he went out to the place being called “The Skull,” which is called in Hebrew Golgotha. (18) Where they crucified him — and with him two others, one on this side and one on that side — and Jesus in the middle. (19) Pilate also wrote a title and placed it on the cross. And it was written: “Jesus the Nazarean, the king of the Judeans.” (20) Therefore many of the Judeans read this title, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, in Greek. (21) So the chief priests of the Judeans said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The king of the Judeans,’ but that that one said, ‘I am king of the Judeans.’” (22) Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.” (23) The soldiers, when they crucified Jesus, took his garments and made four parts — a part for each soldier — and the tunic. And the tunic was seamless, woven from the top throughout. (24) They said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but let us cast lots for it, whose it will be” — that the scripture might be fulfilled: “They divided my garments among themselves, and for my clothing they cast lots.” The soldiers therefore did these things. (25) But standing beside the cross of Jesus were his mother and the sister of his mother, Mary of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. (26) Jesus then, seeing the mother and the disciple standing by whom he loved, says to the mother, “Woman, behold, your son.” (27) Then he says to the disciple, “Behold, your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his own. (28) After this, Jesus, knowing that all things have already been finished — that the scripture might be completed — says, “I thirst.” (29) An implement was lying full of sour wine. They put a sponge full of the sour wine on hyssop and brought it to his mouth. (30) When therefore Jesus received the sour wine, he said, “It has been finished.” And having bowed his head, he delivered up the spirit.

(31) The Judeans then, since it was the Preparation, that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the Sabbath — for the day of that Sabbath was great — asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and they might be taken away. (32) So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other having been crucified with him. (33) But having come upon Jesus, when they saw him already having died, they did not break his legs. (34) But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out. (35) And the one having seen has born witness, and his witness is true; and that one knows that he speaks truth, that you also might believe. (36) For these things happened, that the scripture might be fulfilled: “A bone of him will not be broken.” (37) And again another scripture says: “They will look upon the one whom they pierced.” (38) After these things, Joseph of Arimathea — being a disciple of Jesus, but having been hidden for fear of the Judeans — asked Pilate that he might take the body of Jesus. And Pilate allowed him. So he came and took his body. (39) And Nicodemus also came — the one having come to him at first by night — carrying a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. (40) So they took the body of Jesus and bound it with linen wrappings with the spices, just as the custom of the Judeans is to prepare for burial. (41) Now there was a garden in the place where he was crucified, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had ever yet been placed. (42) There, therefore, because of the Preparation of the Judeans — since the tomb was near — they placed Jesus.

John 20

(1) Now on the first of the Sabbaths, Mary Magdalene comes early, darkness still being upon the tomb, and she sees the stone having been taken away from the tomb. (2) She runs then and comes to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and says to them, “They took the lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they put him.” (3) Peter then went out, and the other disciple, and they were going to the tomb. (4) And the two were running together, and the other disciple ran ahead more quickly than Peter and came first to the tomb. (5) And having stooped, he sees the linen-wrappings lying; however he did not enter. (6) Then Simon Peter also comes, following him, and entered into the tomb; and he beholds the linen-wrappings lying, (7) and the face-cloth which was upon his head, not lying with the linen-wrappings, but having been wrapped up in a place by itself. (8) Then therefore the other disciple, the one having come first to the tomb, also entered, and he saw and believed. (9) For they did not yet know the scripture, that it is necessary for him to rise from the dead. (10) Then the disciples went away again to their own.

(11) But Mary was standing outside at the tomb, weeping. As then she was weeping, she stooped into the tomb, (12) and she beholds two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been lying. (13) And those say to her, “Woman, why do you weep?” She says to them, “Because they took my lord, and I do not know where they put him.” (14) Having said these things, she turned backward, and she beholds Jesus standing, and she did not know that it is Jesus. (15) Jesus says to her, “Woman, why do you weep? Whom do you seek?” That one, supposing that he is the gardener, says to him, “Sir, if you carried him away, tell me where you put him, and I will take him.” (16) Jesus says to her, “Maryam.” Having turned, that one says to him in Hebrew, “Rabbouni!” — which is said, “Teacher.” (17) Jesus says to her, “Do not touch me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, and my God and your God.’” (18) Mary Magdalene comes, announcing to the disciples, “I have seen the lord,” and that he said these things to her.

(19) It being then evening on that day, the first of the Sabbaths, and the doors having been shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Judeans, Jesus came and stood in the middle, and says to them, “Peace to you.” (20) And having said this, he showed the hands and the side to them. Then the disciples rejoiced, having seen the lord. (21) Jesus then said to them again, “Peace to you. Just as the Father has sent me, I also send you.” (22) And having said this, he breathed, and says to them, “Receive holy spirit. (23) Of whomever you forgive the sins, they have been forgiven to them; of whomever you hold, they have been held.”

(24) But Thomas, one of the twelve, the one being called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. (25) So the other disciples were saying to him, “We have seen the lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and put my finger into the mark of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will never believe.” (26) And after eight days, his disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus comes, the doors having been shut, and stood in the middle, and said, “Peace to you.” (27) Then he says to Thomas, “Bring your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side; and do not be unbelieving but believing.” (28) Thomas answered and said to him, “The lord of me and the god of me.” (29) Jesus says to him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed. Blessed are those not having seen and having believed.”

(30) Jesus therefore did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. (31) But these are written, that you might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the son of God, and that believing you might have life in his name.

John 21

(1) After these things Jesus manifested himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias. And he manifested thus. (2) There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas the one being called Didymus, and Nathanael from Cana of Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples. (3) Simon Peter says to them, “I am going fishing.” They say to him, “We also come with you.” They went out and boarded a boat, and in that night they caught nothing. (4) Morning already having come, Jesus stood on the shore; however the disciples did not know that it is Jesus. (5) Jesus then says to them, “Children, you do not have anything to eat, do you?” They answered him, “No.” (6) And he said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find.” They cast then, and they were no longer able to drag it, because of the multitude of the fish. (7) That disciple then whom Jesus loved says to Peter, “It is the lord!” Simon Peter then, having heard that it is the lord, girded on the outer garment — for he was naked — and cast himself into the sea. (8) But the other disciples came in the small boat — for they were not far from the land, but about two hundred cubits — dragging the net of the fish. (9) When then they got out onto the land, they see a charcoal fire lying, and a fish lying on it, and bread. (10) Jesus says to them, “Bring some of the fish which you caught now.” (11) Simon Peter went up and dragged the net onto the land, full of large fish, one hundred fifty-three; and being so many, the net was not torn. (12) Jesus says to them, “Come, breakfast.” None of the disciples dared to inquire of him, “Who are you?” — knowing that it is the lord. (13) Jesus comes and takes the bread and gives to them, and the fish likewise. (14) This is now the third time Jesus was manifested to the disciples, having been raised from the dead.

(15) When then they had breakfasted, Jesus says to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He says to him, “Yes, lord, you know that I love you.” He says to him, “Feed my lambs.” (16) He says to him again, a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He says to him, “Yes, lord, you know that I love you.” He says to him, “Shepherd my sheep.” (17) He says to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved that he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” And he says to him, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus says to him, “Feed my sheep. (18) Amen, amen, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish.” (19) But this he said, signifying by what death he will glorify God. And having said this, he says to him, “Follow me.”

(20) Peter, having turned, sees the disciple whom Jesus loved following — the one who also reclined at the supper upon his chest and said, “Lord, who is the one handing you over?” (21) Having seen this one, Peter says to Jesus, “Lord, and what about this one?” (22) Jesus says to him, “If I will him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me.” (23) This word then went out among the brothers, that that disciple does not die. But Jesus did not say to him that he does not die, but “If I will him to remain until I come, what is that to you?” (24) This is the disciple bearing witness about these things, and the one having written these things; and we know that his witness is true. (25) And there are also many other things which Jesus did — which, if they were written one by one, I suppose the world itself would not contain the books being written.
