1 Peter 1

(1) Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the elect sojourners of the Dispersion of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, (2) according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of the spirit, for obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: grace to you and peace be multiplied.

(3) Blessed is the God and Father of our lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy caused us to be born anew to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, (4) for an inheritance imperishable and undefiled and unfading, having been kept in heaven for you, (5) who are being guarded by God's power through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

(6) In this you exult, though now for a little while, if necessary, having been grieved by various trials, (7) so that the provenness of your faith — more precious than gold, which perishes though it is proven by fire — might be found for praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ — (8) whom, not having seen, you love; in whom, though now not seeing, but believing, you exult with inexpressible and glorified joy, (9) receiving for yourselves the outcome of your faith — salvation of souls.

(10) Concerning this salvation, the prophets — who prophesied about the grace for you — searched out and investigated, (11) searching for what time or what kind of time the spirit of Christ in them was indicating, testifying beforehand the sufferings for Christ and the glories after these things. (12) To them it was revealed that they were ministering these things not for themselves but for you — things which now were announced to you through the ones who proclaimed the glad-tidings to you by the holy spirit sent from heaven — things into which angels long to peer.

(13) Therefore, having girded up the loins of your mind and being sober, hope completely upon the grace being brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ — (14) as children of obedience, not being conformed to the former desires of your ignorance, (15) but like the Holy One who called you, you yourselves also become holy in all conduct, (16) because it has been written: “You will be holy, because I am holy.”

(17) And if you call upon as Father the one who judges impartially according to each one's work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your sojourning, (18) knowing that you were ransomed from your futile conduct handed down from your forefathers, not with perishable things — silver or gold — (19) but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb blameless and spotless, (20) having been foreknown before the foundation of the world, but having been manifested in the last times for you, (21) who through him believe in God, the one who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

(22) Having purified your souls by the obedience of the truth for genuine brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, (23) having been born anew, not from perishable seed but imperishable, through the living and remaining word of God, (24) for “All flesh is like grass, and all its glory like the flower of grass; the grass dried up, and the flower fell off, (25) but the word of the Lord remains for the age.” And this is the word that was proclaimed to you as glad-tidings.

1 Peter 2

(1) Therefore, having put away all evil and all deceit and hypocrisies and envies and all slanders, (2) like newborn infants, yearn for the pure word-related milk, so that by it you may grow for salvation, (3) if you tasted that the lord is kind.

(4) Coming to him — a living stone, rejected by men, but chosen, precious, by God — (5) you yourselves also, like living stones, are being built as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. (6) Therefore it is contained in scripture: “Behold, I am placing in Zion a stone, a chosen, precious cornerstone; and the one who believes in him will not be put to shame.” (7) To you, therefore, who believe, is the honor; but to the disbelieving ones — “The stone the builders rejected, this one became the head of the corner,” (8) and “a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense” — who stumble at the word, being disobedient, to which also they were appointed. (9) But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of the One who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light — (10) who once were not a people, but now are God's people; who had not been shown mercy, but now have been shown mercy.

(11) Beloved, I exhort you, as sojourners and exiles, to abstain from the fleshly desires, which wage war against the soul; (12) having your conduct honorable among the nations, so that in the very thing in which they speak against you as evildoers, observing your good works, they may glorify God on the day of visitation.

(13) Submit to every human institution for the lord's sake: whether to a king as one excelling, (14) or to governors as sent by him for punishment of evildoers and praise of doers of good — (15) because this is the will of God: that by doing good you muzzle the ignorance of foolish men — (16) as free ones, and not having your freedom as a pretext for evil, but as slaves of God. (17) Honor all people; love the brotherhood; fear God; honor the king.

(18) Household slaves, being subject with all fear to your masters — not only to the good and gentle, but also to the crooked. (19) For this is grace: if anyone, for conscience toward God, bears up under griefs, suffering unjustly. (20) For what credit is it if, sinning and being struck, you endure? But if, doing good and suffering, you endure, this is grace with God. (21) For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving behind an example for you, so that you may follow in his footsteps — (22) who committed no sin, nor was deceit found in his mouth; (23) who, being reviled, did not retaliate with reviling; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but kept entrusting himself to the One who judges righteously; (24) who himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that, having died to sins, we might live to righteousness — by whose wound you were healed. (25) For you were straying like sheep, but now you have been turned back to the shepherd and overseer of your souls.

1 Peter 3

(1) Likewise, wives, being subject to your own husbands, so that even if some are disobedient to the word, they will be won without a word through the conduct of the wives, (2) having observed your pure conduct in fear — (3) whose adornment let it not be the outward braiding of hair and putting-around of gold ornaments or putting-on of garments, (4) but the hidden person of the heart, in the imperishable quality of the gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious before God. (5) For thus once also the holy women who were hoping in God were adorning themselves, being subject to their own husbands, (6) as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, whose children you became — doing good and not fearing any intimidation.

(7) Husbands likewise, living together according to knowledge, assigning honor to the feminine vessel as the weaker, as also fellow-heirs of the grace of life, so that your prayers are not hindered.

(8) And finally, all of you: be like-minded, sympathetic, brotherly-loving, tender-hearted, humble-minded, (9) not rendering evil in return for evil or reviling in return for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, because for this you were called, so that you may inherit blessing. (10) For “the one who wants to love life and see good days, let him stop his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit; (11) let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it; (12) because the eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous and His ears are for their petition, but the face of the Lord is upon those doing evil things.”

(13) And who is the one who will harm you if you become zealots of the good? (14) But even if you should suffer because of righteousness, you are blessed. Do not fear their fear, neither be troubled. (15) But consecrate the lord, the Christ, in your hearts, ready always for a defense to everyone asking you an account about the hope in you — (16) but with gentleness and fear, having a good conscience, so that in the very thing in which you are spoken against, those who revile your good conduct in Christ may be put to shame. (17) For it is better, if the will of God should wish it, to suffer while doing good than while doing evil.

(18) Because Christ also once suffered for sins, a righteous one for unrighteous ones, so that he might bring you to God — having been put to death in flesh, but having been made alive in spirit, (19) in which also he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, (20) who were formerly disobedient when the patience of God was waiting in the days of Noah, while the ark was being built, into which a few — that is, eight souls — were brought safely through water. (21) which also now saves you — the antitype, baptism — not a removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal of a good conscience toward God, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, (22) who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, angels and authorities and powers having been subjected to him.

1 Peter 4

(1) Christ therefore having suffered in flesh, you also arm yourselves with the same intention, because the one who has suffered in flesh has ceased from sin, (2) so as to live the remaining time in flesh no longer for human desires but for the will of God.

(3) For sufficient is the time that has passed to have carried out the will of the nations, having walked in sensualities, desires, drunkennesses, carousings, drinking-bouts, and lawless idolatries — (4) in which they are surprised that you do not run with them into the same flood of excess, blaspheming — (5) who will render an account to the one who is ready to judge the living and the dead. (6) For this reason the glad-tidings were proclaimed also to the dead, so that they might be judged according to humans in flesh, but live according to God in spirit.

(7) The end of all things has come near; therefore be sober-minded and be alert for prayers. (8) Before all things, have earnest love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins. (9) Be hospitable to one another without complaining. (10) Each one, as he received a grace-gift, serving it to one another as good stewards of the various grace of God — (11) if anyone speaks, as oracles of God; if anyone serves, as from the strength that God supplies, so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom is the glory and the might for the ages of the ages. Amen.

(12) Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial among you occurring for your testing, as though a strange thing were happening to you. (13) But in as much as you share in the sufferings of the Christ, rejoice, so that also at the revelation of his glory you may rejoice, exulting. (14) If you are reviled in the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. (15) For let none of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or an evildoer or as a meddler; (16) but if as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this part. (17) Because it is time for the judgment to begin from the house of God; and if first from us, what will be the end of those disobeying the glad-tidings of God? (18) And if the righteous one is scarcely saved, where will the ungodly and sinner appear? (19) Therefore also let those suffering according to the will of God entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing good.

1 Peter 5

(1) I exhort the elders among you — the fellow-elder and a witness of the sufferings of the Christ, the one also a sharer of the glory about to be revealed: (2) shepherd the flock of God among you, overseeing not by compulsion, but willingly according to God; neither for base gain, but eagerly; (3) neither as lording over the portions, but becoming examples of the flock. (4) And when the chief-shepherd has been manifested, you will receive for yourselves the unfading crown of glory.

(5) Likewise, younger ones, be subject to elders. And all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God opposes the proud ones but gives grace to the humble ones. (6) Be humbled, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that He may exalt you in due time, (7) having cast all your anxiety upon Him, because He cares for you.

(8) Be alert, be watchful. Your adversary, the devil, like a roaring lion, walks around seeking someone to swallow up — (9) whom withstand, firm in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are being accomplished among your brotherhood in the world. (10) And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace — the one who called you to His eternal glory in Christ — He Himself will restore, strengthen, empower, establish you. (11) To Him be the might for the ages. Amen.

(12) Through Silvanus, the faithful brother, as I regard him, I wrote to you with few words, exhorting and testifying that this is the true grace of God — stand in it. (13) The co-elect in Babylon greets you, and Mark, my son. (14) Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to you all, the ones in Christ.
